Pings of Lull

By Kate Baldwin

I knew it was raining, for it ad been all day. Hair frizzy, knees swollen, I could not wait to climb into bed. Every year, I wait for rain so that I can listen to my favorite kerplunk. A drainpipe clings to the front corner of my house that, while the rain is falling, echoes a constant "ping ping ping". Every winter, it lulls me to sleep. Remembering past rains, I climbed into bed, pulled the blankets all the way up to my neck and lay real still to be able to hear my lullaby. "I must be breathing too hard" I thought. So, I held my breath, searching for the sound but it was gone. I sat up, tugged on m blinds, separating the strips of wood only to find that the water was sloshing out of the dark sky. I stomped out of bed, down the long hallway and into the farthest room from mine, my parents'. I flicked the light switch, forcing a gasp out of my mother, and then went to stand right next to my father. He squinted at me, and my mother retreated under the covers like a turtle. "Pop! What did you do to the drainpipe?" "Oh, do you like that? I fixed it!" "WHAT!?" I grabbed my slippers and sprinted out into my front yard. I could feel the monstrous drops of fresh, cold, water penetrating my dry, blonde head, but I kept on. I encountered my favorite drainpipe, forced my oversized hand into the mysterious black hole, and grasped a sopping sponge. With mixed feelings of accomplishment and frustration, I threw the dirty sponge down into the grand puddle below me, and ran back inside, shook off the water, kicked off my slippers towards the closet, climbed back under the covers, held my breath and there it was. "Ah," I sighed, "I thought I'd lost you."
