To Change the World

By Stephanie Parreira

I look around
And what I see
Is Earth, bombarded mercilessly
A pile of trash,
A slaughtered tree
How bad can the damage be?

I listen close
And what I hear
The Earth cries out in desperate fear
A forest burns,
I shed a tear
And pray the end is not so near.

Another smokestack towering high
Another forest burns and dies
An eagle shot down from the sky
What future lies ahead?

Alas! A glimmer, a spark of hope
Who am I to sit and mope
when I could help the world to cope
with everything we've done?

Another newly planted tree,
A sparrow with its fledglings three,
And one more bag of recyclable things
To life once more the earth shall cling.
And so Iíve come to realize
that in our hands the future lies
But do not fear the end and weep
as long as this promise you continue to keep

To make the world a better place,
To rid the pollution and all disgrace,
To gaze at nature and its beautiful face
is all I ask of you now.
