Horizon, Ole, Close-Up and FFA are just a few fo the clubs and groups at Tomales High. New this year to our school is the "Be the Change Club," which promotes positive attitudes and environment-friendly projects. Advised by Ms. Goldwitz, this club is all about acts of kindness and respect. Every month the club chooses two teachers who have stood out and rewards them with a gift from the heart.
Along with honoring teachers each month, the club has put together a group that will go around the school each week and put up posters advertising good and positive thoughts. The makers of the posters work very hard to help get the word out that violence isn'the answer.
The club has also turned old trash cans into recycle bins that will take cans, paper, plastic, and glass. Elena Irving has taken it upon herself to paint the new bins so students will know which one to recycle in, letting everyone know our school is making a change. Mr. Hervy will then drive the recycled goos to Waste Management so the items will be recycled properly.
"Be the change" club recently organized a "Mix-it-up" at lunch rally. Mandy Perucchi and Jose Romoled the school-wide rally encouraging students to challenge themselves and break the barriers of cliques and groups in the school. The club put together some fun group games like "telephone" and "red rover" to inspire the spirit of togetherness among THS students. Many teachers joined in the fun by sitting and chatting with students during lunch time.
"Be the Change" is even planning to organize field trips to local beaches to go clean p the area to promote a clean environment. They are also planning to invite guest speakers to talk on various topics to inspire the students at THS. So far, theresponse to the club has been very positive. It already has about 10 - 12 regular members who attend a weekly lunch meeting at Ms. Goldowitz's room on Tuesdays. Mr. Hervy and Ms. Kaplan are also avid supporters and advisors of the club and help with project ideas.
They new club has great ideas and plans for not only our school but for our environment as well, and maybe
"Be the Change" can help influence other students at Tomales to help out and be the change they want to see in the world.
