Inspiring Young Emerging Leaders (I-YEL) is a youth environmental organization where youth run and make decisions. During the Fall, we do many workshops and learn about different environmental issues that will prepare the interns for the New Year in January. We pick a project topic that we will be focusing on an environmental issue that we'll be working on for about five months. After we choose the issue, we will design a project about the issue that will be presented to the community. In addition, the I-YEL interns learn and gain planning skills, leadership skills such as public speaking, coordinating, facilitating, and being a mentor to other teens. The I-YEL interns also help bring teens out to national parks. As I-YEL interns we are challenged and we are tested on all we can do.
World Savvy provides educational programs and services with the aim of informing young people about issues such as poverty, conflict and peace building, human rights, and the environment. World Savvy's goals are to develop students' skills to prepare them for their future as global citizens, enhance their understanding of world affairs and develop their sense of responsibility and global citizenship.
On December 7, 2007 at the Zeum in San Francisco, California, World Savvy held an event that helped youth explore international issues and create original art and media. This year World Savvy's theme is power. I-YEL interpreted World Savvy's theme of power by looking at big corporate companies' commercial advertisement and how they advertise their company to make consumers buy their product. The I-YEL education team teamed up into groups and researched powerful corporations and found out what their company is actually doing behind closed doors. I-YEL created posters using Adobe Photoshop to create our own advertisement to reveal what the companies are really doing. By revealing what the companies are really doing, we take away power from the companies and give that power back to the consumer.
