PBS has recently begun the project of creating an informative, intriguing new documentary. Entitled "Nourish", the film focuses on our human relationship with one of the most enjoyable aspects of life - food. Where we get it, how we buy it, from whom we buy it, how much we spend to get it, and even our favorite kinds of culinary creations are covered throughout the film. Of course, there's a twist-the film not only explores the joys of food, but how we are connected as a global community through food, its customs, and its history. The environmental impact of food is also explored, providing food for thought (pun intended) about our rates of consumption and what we can do to reduce it.
This is where the fun part happens-I got to be a part of this amazing experience! I was initially interviewed to be featured on the documentary, and asked questions about my favorite foods and what kinds of issues related to the food industry are relevant environmentally. As the day of the actual interview approached, I was slightly nervous, but genuinely excited that my opinions would be heard.
The interview itself was great - my prompter asked me questions pertaining to my eating habits, family traditions involving food, and why locally grown food should be utilized more frequently than imported food. Naturally, I related my experiences with The Green Screen to my answers - knowing the impact of feedlot beef on both the environment and personal health, along with crops that may not be organic, and packaging that is not quite environmentally friendly, definitely helped to round out my opinions and add some points of interest.
In total, 17 young adults were interviewed throughout the day of taping - unfortunately, it is not guaranteed that my responses and opinions will even be included in the final production of the documentary. But that's ok; I'm just really glad that I got the opportunity to participate in something that both made me think and hopefully will get others thinking about food and the way we live today.
