Editor’s Note: Welcome to "The Green"!
Editor: Jenny Cade <jennyc@acterra.org>

Welcome to the first edition of EarthTeam’s new monthly student-written newsletter, "The Green". This issue will be shorter than those to follow, simply because it is the first and is not yet fully developed.

So this is how this newsletter is going to work: We have a current staff of five student editors for five sections: Editor’s Notes, Environmental News, Opinions, Interviews, and Poetry. The editors are responsible for coordinating contributions from you, the readers, and/or writing their own articles each month. If you would like to contribute, contact the editor for the section you are interested in. (Editor’s emails are listed at the top of each section.)

It should also be noted that there are still openings for editors for the following sections: Book Review, High School and Middle School Events Editor, Calendar Editor, Action/Quote of the Month Coordinator, Entertainment Editor, and an International Connections Editor. Contact Sheilah Fish <sheilah@earthteam.net> if you think you may be interested in filling a position.

For the Editor’s Note, I will be printing letters to the editor, which should be sent to me via my email address (see above), so feel free to send along you comments, suggestions, and questions.

And so, with no further ado, I give you the November, 2002 issue of "The Green".

Opinions: Icy Warnings by contributor Georgios Theophanous
Editor: Jeff Gustafson <followerofthoth@yahoo.com>

Winter is the season of frosty mornings and red ears and noses, a season when often the nearest source of warmth is the fireplace. In such a time, concerns about global warming tend to be packed into the corners of our minds, to be recalled with the warmer temperatures of spring and summer. Yet, in the midst of the world’s coldest climates, the ice of the Antarctic, researchers have not forgotten the ever-present threat of global warming, and they have a bit of news for all of us. According to recent studies conducted near the South Pole, there is a 5% chance that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, or the WAIS, will collapse within the next two hundred years.

Book Review: Orchid Fever by Eric Hansen
Editor: Rebecca Smith <hellocaper@aol.com>

Learning about the author's trek through the Borneo jungle several years earlier, two orchid hobbyists sought him out, hoping that he would lead them on an expedition in search of the fabled Paphiopedilum sanderianum. The two-week trip to Fire Mountain immersed Eric Hansen in the world of orchid politics. Orchid politics? Is there such a thing? Skeptical, yet intrigued, he embarked upon a mission to puzzle out the inner workings of the global orchid network… a journey that took him all over the globe as he tracked down the key players.

Not present on the year
At any other period.
When March is scarcely here
